Finding peace and beauty in wet felting

How our felt workshops bring peace

Wet felting is a very tactile process. From pulling hanks loose from the skeins to rinsing the finished article it is hands on and transformative. As you massage the suds into the wool you watch it change from loose, disconnected fibres to something bonded and strong. You choose how strong or loose you want it to be.

What you don’t fully choose is the end result. You can choose colours, layer the wool to create depth and texture, add other items like bark, ribbon or cloth and make adjustments while it is dry, but once you begin that massaging process the wool takes on a life of it’s own! Colours look different, strands move to make new patterns and you find yourself discovering aspects you never knew were there!

A bit like life really.

Wet felt emerges from the making process with a life of its own – you can plan and guide but it always surprises you.

Ideal training for control freaks everywhere, as well as a healing experience for those who disengaged from traditional art because they couldn’t get it to ‘look’ right.

…the possibilities are endless
Felting lends itself to a range of styles, here are some of the options:
Landscapes
Bring your favourite holiday memories and turn them into textiles! This is from Yorkshire
Abstract
Play with pattern and texture without the constraints of representation! Add ribbon, bark, driftwood and much more to enhance your piece
Mixed Media
Adding felted elements to other textiles adds depth and texture.
Inspirational
Feeling inspired by your favourite artist? Try a felted interpretation of one of their pieces. This piece is one of a series inspired by Monet’s waterlilies
Cards & more
The more you massage your felted piece, the thicker it gets. Thicker felt can be cut to shape and used to make cards, Christmas decorations, toys, etc.

Workshops

Workshops are available regularly throughout the year. The venue has a large, airy room with space for up to 6 participants.

If you have a group of up to 6 people who would like to do a workshop together please get in touch to discuss availability.

I am able to accommodate larger groups in an alternative venue, please get in touch for further details.

Starter session

1.5-2hrs

You will get an introduction to how to felt with a few pro tips along the way and will complete one small felted piece. A taster session for adults, or ideal for children (10+) with slightly shorter attention spans!

One off session

2-3hrs

You will have an introduction to how to felt, a few pro tips, and will make a tester piece of felt to get a feel for it. You then get the chance to design a larger piece, choose your felts, add other materials to enhance your design and create your own felt! Bring pictures & photos to use as inspiration and any thread/ribbon/fabric/driftwood etc. that you would like to add.

Follow on sessions

2-3hrs

Working on the piece you have already made you will be able to add backing and embellishment – stitching, beading etc. as well as felting an additional piece to complement it.

Longer courses

6wk modules

Suitable for groups who want to take on a bigger project. This can be individual or group pieces. Get in touch to discuss options.

A course would usually include:
Introductory session
2 sessions exploring different styles of felting using a variety of techniques
Final piece:
Planning and testing out session
Creating session
Embellishment session to add detail

Meet Rachel Heppenstall

“I have always been fascinated by textures and textiles. Although I was put off representational art at school I continued to create in my own time, running art workshops for both children and adults, featuring felting, batik and tie-dye as well as the more traditional painting and drawing.

Intrigued more by the process of artmaking than the end result, I undertook a Diploma in Art Therapy in 2007 and for many years have used the skills I developed working with children with physical and mental health issues, engaging them in the creative process and enabling them to produce work they didn’t think they were capable of!

Felting has been a key part of this, and I love watching people’s confidence grow as they engage with this beautiful, tactile resource.”

Rachel lives in Charlton Kings with her husband and three children. She loves her allotment but has managed to kill off every house plant she’s ever owned. She enjoys long walks in the hills followed by coffee and cooked breakfast. Over the last twenty years she has studied philosophy, worked in a rare books library, campaigned for recycling awareness, lectured in Environmental ethics in business, managed a cafe and taught Art. She loves to combine her passion for art with her environmental ethics.

Fully covered with DBS and PLI

Current projects

My latest project has been a mixed media piece called 42: Big Blue.

This piece was inspired by Blue Planet II episode 4: Big Blue where a mother whale had to leave it’s calf to dive down over a kilometre deep to feed. The calf was forced to stay near the surface as it was unable to hold its breath for long enough to reach the depths where goodness could be found.  All this self-sacrificial care is enacted within an ocean adrift with plastic pollution and all the dangers surrounding it.

I hear the tumult of the raging seas
as your waves and surging tides crash over me
But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me
and through each night I sing his songs
praying to the God who gives me life
Psalm 42:7-8

Mixed media including felting, batik, embroidery and applique.  All plastic waste and other flotsam found on beaches in Cornwall and Dorset.

FAQs

What is felting?
Wet felting is the art of taking washed, dyed and carded wool and layering it into patterns and shapes that can then be ‘felted’. This involves adding water and soap and massaging the wool until all the fibres grab onto each other and create a solid piece. The more you massage, the thicker and stronger your piece will become!
What happens when I turn up?
Each participant will be welcomed and given their own space at the table with a matt and starter materials. You choose the colours you would like to work with and I will show you how to work them all together!
What does it cost?
For small group workshops I charge £12/hour per person. Groups need a minimum of 3 people for a 2hr session or 5 people for a 1.5hr session to run.

For groups with their own premises my charges are £45 per hour session. Half days are £90 (one 3hr session or 2 shorter sessions) and full days £180 (two 2.5-3hr sessions or up to 4 shorter sessions).

For longer courses or larger groups rates can be arranged – please get in touch

What if I need to cancel?
Plans change and I will try to be flexible and rearrange your session if something comes up. However, to cover my own costs, an admin fee of 10% will be charged for changes. Cancellations within 7 days of the workshop will incur a 50% charge.
What if I can't make the dates available?
Get in touch! I am happy to offer extra dates as long as I am able to fill the minimum number of participants.

Are you insured?
I am fully covered with a DBS for working with children and Public Liability insurance for working from my own venues and your venue if required.
Do I need to bring anything?
You can create a beautiful piece of felt with just the materials and inspiration that I provide. But you are welcome to come with your own sources of inspiration – photos or pictures – and your own extras to add – ribbon, wool, fabric etc.
I have a group that would like to try felting - can you come to us?
I am happy to work in different venues as long as there is airflow, a large table and access to warm water. I have worked everywhere from homes and halls to schools and sheds!

I also have access to venues around Cheltenham if you have a group but no venue of your own.

For travel outside Cheltenham an additional mileage cost would be included in the fee.
